About 45 youth leaders from across Pietermaritzburg came together for the second Youth Mission Committee meeting on Saturday 12 November at the Voortrekker Church. The meeting was facilitated by Ps Greg Smeardon of Gods Family Life Centre (GFLC).

The group had been divided into zones of the city and then each zone divided into sub-committees. These committees have been encouraged to take ownership of the mission in 2012 and to “dream” big!

Each sub-committee, under the direction of a team leader, will be meeting before the next committee meeting to discuss their dreams for their respective areas. They will each produce a basic outline of these ideas.

Objectives for each sub-committee

  • To reach the ‘unreached’ through practical ministries or ‘deeds’ in their area
  • To empower local people through basic training (e.g. how to share your testimony, how to lead people to Christ etc) to engage in ministry
  • To connect with AE and tap into their infrastructure by identifying the type of people you want to utilise and skills you need and letting AE know.
  • To build an infrastructure that can change the city of PMB.

Miles Giljam, AE SA’s team leader, briefly gave input into a broader mission objective. “In Africa, often we are focused on souls and not discipleship” he said.  “That is why in a city with huge numbers of Christians we still see corruption and decay. We want to see the glory of God in Pietermaritzburg, in every part of society and infrastructure”.

To encourage the youth in taking ownership of the mission, it was suggested that each youth group should start a fund for the mission, sowing into the mission and taking personal responsibility for seeing souls saved.

The youth committee has decided to begin work in the city as soon as possible and have proposed two large events in the new year where the youth of the whole city will come together, possibly a march in the city, as well as a large ‘Youth Day’ event on June 16th. Alongside this it has been proposed that each sub-committee organises an event or outreach in its own area. Each youth member will be challenged to bring one non believer along to these events.

The next youth committee meetings will be as follows: Saturday 03 Dec 2011 (7am) at City Harvest; Saturday 21 Jan 2012 (7am) Venue TBA; Sat 18 Feb 2012 (7am) Venue TBA
